Dried Fruit Technical Services (DFTS) is a Section 21 company that manages industry related research and development, maintains technical information, a database, and administers the statutory levy in terms of the regulations of the National Agricultural Marketing Act and the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC).
This mouthpiece of a new and transformed dried fruit industry, in conjunction with government institutions and other interested parties, plays a significant role in the protection of the interests of its producers.
From its offices in the picturesque Boland town of Paarl, the DFTS co-ordinates numerous activities and functions in the best interests of the industry.
A Board, representative of producers and other role players, fronts and manages the activities of the DFTS to ensure maximum participation of role players, collaboration and cost effective industry services and functions. The most important link in the industry is the producer. The industry operates in a free market environment without any government subsidy.
DFTS is an active partner in several training and social development programmes. DFTS played a definite roll in the social programmes and community centres where HORTGRO is involved and acknowledges its responsibility towards producers and their employees to provide for and support all previously disadvantaged communities in all spheres of the industry.
DFTS facilitates and manages a range of technical, agricultural and nutritional research projects that are of importance to the industry to make sure that the producers remain competitive.
In this way, plant improvement and development, the import of new and improved cultivars and varieties that offer better resistance to pests and diseases are done on behalf of the industry.
This is surely evidence that this comparatively small industry plays a prominent role in the international arena.
