Welcome to the new beginning

In the deciduous fruit industry (DFI), economic development is not an event but a process that requires agility to adapt to its rapidly changing environment. The capital-intensive nature of the DFI coupled with industry challenges in a VUCA (Volatility,Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity) environment, ranging from geopolitics, climate change, local political instability and a complex marketing environment, impedes the progress of economically vulnerable emerging/first generation/BBBEE producers. These producers already have little to no margin for error. Hence the need to  reposition and  review developmental plans  that  facilitate  and enable  stability for our emerging/first-generation/BBBEE  producers through targeted, needs-driven and innovative interventions. Industry efforts and interventions prioritise the safeguarding of investments and building on progress.

To be able to meaningfully and sustainably transform our industry, we are creating and facilitating a conducive environment for all. This cannot be achieved in isolation and relies on partnerships from both the public and private sectors. From the industry’s side, we are excited about the future.

Some of the industry challenges that first-generation, emerging, and BBBEE producers encounter, in both domestic and international markets, are:

Packhouse Cases
Packhouse Cases
Affordability Of Technology And Innovation
No One Size Fits All
Technical Capacity In Non Traditional Fruit Areas
Access To Finance
Building And Generational Wealth Is A Long Term Sprocess

Economic development works to create an enabling environment for integrating emerging/first generation/BBBEE producers in the whole dfi value chain through:

Participation and representation in industry decision-making structures.

Cultivating aspiring agri-preneurs through assisting in the creation, facilitation and scaling of different business models.

Creating innovative ways of increasing access to land, water, financial and other production resources in traditional and non-traditional fruit-producing regions in a manner that is sensitive to climate change and advances transformation.

Collaborate and partner with public and private institutions to leverage additional resources and support for transformation and economic development aligned to the needs of producers and the industry.

Facilitating alignment between industry and government policies to support structures that enable economic transformation and actively influence policy relating to land reform and economic development.

Promote and enhance the participation of women, youth and differently abled people in all aspects of the DFI value chain.

Facilitating export readiness and market compliance concerning Global GAP and SIZA.

Identifying and creating capacity for individuals who have the passion, interest, motivation, and aptitude to succeed in agri-entrepreneurship.

Influencing policy and decision makers on the progress of transformation  in the DFI by developing and coordinating  a communication strategy.

Advancing transformation on the African continent by proudly presenting the SA DFI as a potential partner and  lobbying government and other role players.

Measuring and monitoring progress towards transformational goals, with a focus on commercialisation, by developing objective measuring criteria.
