Perishable Products Export Regulations

By Agbiz | Newsletter 21 January 2025
The notice attached details the framework for regulating the export of perishable products in South Africa under the Perishable Products Export Control Act. It establishes standards and procedures to ensure the safety, hygiene, and quality of perishable goods during export, focusing on compliance with international trade requirements.

Exporters, cold chain service providers, and transportation facilities are required to register with the Perishable Products Export Control Board (PPECB) and obtain certifications. Annual inspections of facilities, vehicles, and equipment are mandatory to maintain compliance and quality standards.
A critical focus is placed on cold chain management, with strict temperature requirements for various products during storage, handling, and transportation. The regulations detail protocols for refrigerated containers, road transport, and shipping vessels, including mandatory temperature monitoring and reporting to safeguard product quality.

The framework mandates the submission of data and reports from exporters and service providers. This includes shipment details such as product type, destination, temperature settings, and inspection results. Regular updates on port operations, vessel arrivals, and the condition of products during transit are also required to ensure transparency and accountability. Additionally, the document outlines infrastructure and equipment standards for port terminals, cold storage facilities, and transportation modes. These standards are essential to maintaining the integrity of perishable goods throughout the export process.

Non-compliance with these regulations may result in penalties, withdrawal of certifications, or the rejection of export products. By implementing these stringent measures, the regulations aim to maintain South Africa’s reputation as a reliable exporter of high-quality perishable products while enhancing the efficiency and safety of the export supply chain.
