Western Cape agriculture lost R5.6-billion and 30 000 jobs because of the recent drought. The sector employs 340 000 people and contributes 10% to the provincial GDP. Earlier this month industry groupings called on the government to reveal how much water they are likely to be allocated for the coming season. Hortgro’s Anton Rabe said that the cut of 60% to agriculture, compared with 45% to Cape Town and other municipalities, was not a fair allocation. Rabe was however confident that good news is on the way.
