2025 DAAN STRYDOM SCIENCE and TECHNICAL AWARD | Johan Strydom

The Daan Strydom Science and Technical Award is an accolade that recognises excellence in research, science, and technology, and honours those whose work has transformed the deciduous fruit industry.

This year, we celebrate not just an achievement, but a lifetime of dedication — a career defined by vision, innovation, and impact. From the earliest days of his career, Johan demonstrated a rare ability to blend scientific insight with practical application. Over decades, his work reshaped the way our fruit moves from orchard to market — enhancing quality, improving efficiency, and unlocking new levels of competitiveness for South Africa’s deciduous fruit exports.

In the field of logistics, Johan played a pivotal role in overseeing the seamless transition from rail to road transport. This shift not only generated substantial cost savings for the industry but also ensured that the cold chain was maintained from inland cold stores to direct quayside vessel loading. As a result, the reliance on expensive port cold storage was dramatically reduced, while our global reputation for delivering top-quality fruit remained firmly intact.

He also pioneered the containerisation of fruit exports, implementing operational procedures, establishing inland inspection protocols, and promoting the palletisation of produce on disposable pallets. These measures streamlined operations, reduced the risk of handling damage, and significantly shortened turnaround times.

Johan’s work extended beyond logistics into the very essence of our exports’ seasonality. Through the early adoption of controlled atmosphere storage, he enabled apples and other produce to be stored for extended periods without compromising quality. This not only improved the condition of fruit arriving in overseas markets but also allowed the industry to take advantage of more favourable late-season freight rates.

His forward-looking approach to technology integration led to the creation of the Fruinet system, and he served as project leader for the Paltrack system. Johan helped establish an industry-standard platform that continues to play a vital role in fruit export logistics to this day.

Finally, his innovations in packaging have had a lasting impact, ensuring that fruit arrived in better condition, extended its shelf life, and expanded the range of markets that could be reached.

Johan’s influence is remarkable. His innovations touched every link in the value chain — from orchard handling protocols and cold storage practices to packaging design and transport efficiency. The return on investment for the industry has been substantial, with lower logistical costs, reduced product losses, extended market access windows, and a sustained boost to South Africa’s reputation for delivering high-quality fruit globally.

It is no exaggeration to say that much of today’s export infrastructure and best-practice handling protocols bear Johan’s imprint. His work not only supported the growth of the deciduous fruit industry but also strengthened allied sectors, such as citrus and table grapes.

A spirit of collaboration has defined his career, as he serves on industry forums and workgroups, mentors the next generation, and champions improvements that benefit the entire industry rather than any single stakeholder.
