JULY UPDATE: Pest Control Operator Applications

Hortgro recently joined other agricultural stakeholders in a meeting with the Registrar to discuss, among other issues, the licensing of pest control operators (PCOs).  

The Registrar confirmed that there will be no extension regarding the implementation of the regulation or a phased-in approach. They are, however, considering taking prior learning into account. It is likely, however, that applicants will still need to register for an accredited short course if they do not possess a relevant degree or diploma.  

It has been confirmed that there is currently no timeline for a decision on the acceptance of prior learning. It is also not clear how the acceptance of prior learning will be implemented. 

Hortgro, therefore, reiterates the information previously shared and urges producers to apply for the PCO license(s) as soon as possible, submitting all required documents to the Registrar. For more information on the process and requirements, as previously provided, the following documents are available as guidance:

Please note that the application fee for a PCO licence is now R3,141.00 (from 1 April 2025), as published in the Government Gazette no. 52388 of 28 March 2025.
