Winner: Dr Elke Crouch

Motivation: The Daan Strydom Science and Technology Award to Dr Elke Crouch in recognition of her outstanding contribution to South Africa’s deciduous fruit industry. Elke has devoted more than two decades to postharvest physiology, teaching, applied research and industry service, with a particular focus on the quality, storability and market performance of apples and pears. Her career is a compelling example of science serving industry: rigorous, practical and consistently directed at solving problems that matter to producers, packhouses, exporters and consumers.

Since joining Stellenbosch University’s Department of Horticultural Science in 2003, Elke has become an internationally recognised leader in postharvest fruit physiology. A defining feature of Elke’s contribution is the strong alignment of her research programme with industry needs. As Post-Harvest Physiology Research Chair in Deciduous Fruit, supported by Hortgro, she has built a sustained platform for applied and fundamental research into pome fruit quality. Her work addresses some of the industry’s most costly and complex quality challenges, including internal browning in ‘Cripps Pink’, ‘Fuji’ and related apple cultivars, superficial scald in ‘Granny Smith’, and mealiness in ‘Forelle’ pears. Her research on these topics is central to maintaining fruit quality during long-distance export, reducing waste, protecting producer returns and strengthening the reputation of South African fruit. Her standing in the industry is reflected in repeated recognition from Hortgro Science for final research reports and in awards linked to student research outputs.

Elke’s CV documents a substantial body of peer-reviewed publications and conference proceedings in leading horticultural and postharvest journals. She has also hosted and served on organising committees for major horticultural science events, including the 14th International Pear Symposium in Stellenbosch.

Elke has made an exceptional contribution to human-capacity development. She has supervised or co-supervised numerous PhD and MScAgric graduates. Almost all of these students have worked on industry-funded projects and have become part of the technical knowledge base that supports the South African fruit sector. Through her teaching in postharvest physiology and technology, and her mentorship of young researchers, she has helped ensure that the industry has access to well-trained specialists who understand both scientific principles and commercial realities.

Elke’s value to industry is also evident in her long-standing service on technical and advisory bodies, showing that her expertise is trusted not only within academic circles but also by industry bodies that guide quality management, storage practice, and technical decision-making. Her ability to translate complex postharvest physiology into practical guidance through presentations and guidelines is among her most valuable contributions: it ensures that new knowledge reaches those making day-to-day decisions about harvest maturity, cooling, controlled atmosphere storage, disorder risk, and fruit handling.

Alongside her industry service, Elke has made substantial contributions to Stellenbosch University through departmental leadership. As Head of the Department of Horticultural Science from 2023 to the present, she has helped steward a key academic home for horticultural training, research capacity and industry-facing expertise in South Africa. This leadership strengthens the institutional base from which the deciduous fruit industry draws skilled graduates, applied research and scientific support.

Elke’s achievements combine scientific excellence, practical relevance, postgraduate training, collaborative leadership and sustained service to the South African deciduous fruit industry. Her work has strengthened the industry’s ability to understand, predict and manage postharvest disorders, thereby supporting export reliability, producer profitability and consumer confidence. This award is a fitting recognition of her exceptional and lasting contribution, passion and selfless service to the industry.
