Going Green: resource management and sustainability is on the move
Nitasha Baijnath-Pillay, Hortgro’s Resource Management & Sustainability Manager is gathering knowledge on the current state of sustainability, its challenges and how Hortgro can contribute from a production and postharvest perspective.
Throughout July, Nitasha has visited numerous farms and packhouses.
-
- A site visit to Fruitways in Grabouw was conducted on 16 July
- From 29 – 30 July she visited the Koue Bokkeveld & Ceres region and met with Ceres Fruit Growers, DuToit Agri, De Keur and ZZ2
- To end off the month’s visits is a site visit to the Pro-Hort site in Robertson on 31 July with Provar
Nitasha also attended the 9th World Congress of Conservative Agriculture from 22-25 July, which included a practical site visit to the Western Cape’s Langgewens Research Farm. The purpose of the practical day was to view soil health and production in four soil disturbance regimes; grazing strategies; a long-term conservation agriculture trial and soil pits. Local farmers shared their experiences of rotation systems and there were also high-tech exhibitions on drones and agriculture.
